Description:
Tricia has a bright idea for bringing scrapbooking into home decore. She's created a night light using her favorite photo and transparent photo transfers.
Required supplies:
- Craft Glue Dots
- Removable Glue Dots
- Night Light Kit; complete kit from Club Scrap includes:
- Continuous Glue Lines
- Mini Glue Dots
- 12 x 12" Rhapsody Cream Print cardstock
- 8-1/2 x 11" Rust Plain cardstock
- Night Light
- 10" beaded trim
- Gold Rick Rack
- Laminate
- Bone folder
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Small plastic tub
- Zero center ruler
- Piercing tool
- Photo of choice
Step-by-step instructions:
- Separate the light fixture from the self-adhesive shade and set aside.
- Peel the release paper from the shade and carefully set aside. The release paper will serve as a template.
- Create a transparent photo by: 1) make a color copy of your photo. 2) Peel the backing off a piece of clear laminate or adhesive contact paper large enough to cover the copy of your photo. 3) Lay the laminate on top of the photo. 4) Burnish with a bone folder to get good adhesion and ensure the ink transfers from the photo to your laminate.
- To size the photo for the shade: 1) Find the center of the release paper template using a zero center ruler and mark with a pencil. 2) Fold the left side of the template over to the center mark. 3) Fold the right side of the template over to the center mark. Unfold both sides of the template.
- Turn the template over and reverse the two folds so that the matte side is facing out. Place a couple of Removable Glue Dots on the center section of the template.
- Lay the laminated photo right side down on the work surface. Position the center of the template over the photo with the flaps still folded and facing up. Press down onto the photo so it sticks to the Glue Dots. Trace around the template.
- Remove the template from the back of the laminated photo. Cut out the marked area of the photo.
- Place the laminated photo copy in a small tub of water and let it soak for a few minutes.
- With the laminated photo still in the water, rub the paper off the back of the laminate. The ink from the photo will stay on the laminate but with the paper removed, the photo is now transparent.
- To make the side panels for the shade: 1) Lay the Cream Print paper included in your kit face down on the work surface. 2) Align the shade template on top of the paper so that one side panel is over the paper and the side creases lines up with the edge of the paper. 3) Trace around the side panel and cut out. 4) Repeat for the other side panel.
- Cut out two 1/2 x 3-1/2" strips of Orange Plain paper to act as ribbons and hide the seams where the paper meets the photo.
- Attach the cut paper panels to the lamp shade, starting at the left edge of the shade. Attach the transparent photo to the lamp shade.
- To attach the ribbons, run a line of Continous Glue Lines down the seam where the Cream Print paper meets the photo. Cut the Glue Line to the proper length and attach the ribbons.
- Using a piercing tool, carefully pierce holes through the Cream Print panels and the shade so light can show through the shade.
- To attach the beaded trim, run Continuous Glue Lines accross the twill edging at the bottom of the shade, starting on the backside of the shade and wrapping around the edge to the front and to the other side.
- Press the beaded trim onto the Continuous Glue Line, making sure the ribbon wraps around the side edges.
- To attach the gold trim, place Mini Glue Dots at 1/2" intervals onto the trim and attach to the top and bottom edges of the shade.
- Attach a metal accent onto the shade using Craft Glue Dots.
